Sprint takes femtocells wholesale

Sprint, which was the most aggressive early supporter of mobile virtual network operators and wireless resale among the major wireless companies, announced that its wholesale group will offer femtocell solutions to its wireless resale partners, and--of more significance to the wireline world--to landline telcos and cable TV companies looking to provide wireless coverage inside customer homes.

The wireless carrier is pitching the CDMA-based femtocell solution as a more reliable, higher-quality option than relying on an unlicensed spectrum technology like Wi-Fi. Sprint may not find partners among the largest telcos with in-house wireless groups, but there are plenty of smaller telcos and other service providers that might see a femtocell resale practice as a potentially cost-effective option for slowing the progress of landline losses.
