Verizon temporarily waives charges on calls made to Haiti

Verizon is expanding its support to earthquake victims in Haiti by waiving both wireless and wireline long-distance residential voice charges through the end of January.

Beginning this Wednesday, any call made from a residential wireline or Verizon Wireless phone to Haiti will be rated at $0.00 per minute. Any calls that were made between Jan. 12 through Jan. 31 to Haiti will be credited in future billing statements. Any Verizon International Single Rate plan customers who have either 300 or 500 minutes of long-distance calling will be able to call Haiti without taking away any minutes from their allotted time blocks.

"We want to help alleviate some of the agony being experienced by our customers trying to reach loved ones in Haiti," said Susan Retta, vice president of consumer products for Verizon in a release. "Waiving the calling charges will help our customers focus on tracking down and keeping in touch with their family and friends without having to also worry about the cost of the call."
