Middleburgh Telephone Company injects fiber into access network

23.09.2009

Upstate N.Y.-based Middleburgh Telephone might not be the household name in Fiber to the Premises deployments, but the telco`s recent move to upgrade its existing HFC network with Motorola`s GPON and RF overlay video solutions shows the desire to have a smooth HFC to fiber upgrade path. With support for one-gigahertz RF overlay and SCTE-5-1 RF return path and integrated return path demodulation, Motorola`s GPON solution will help Middleburgh get the benefits of FTTP while preserving its existing RF video network and STB investments.

For its fiber network upgrade, Middleburgh is deploying Motorola`s AXS2200 optical line terminal (OLT) and the 1 GHz capable ONT1400 single-family optical network terminal (ONT). What`s more, the Motorola FTTP OLTs and ONTs have built-in support for SCTE-55-1 or Motorola`s own RF return path functionality so existing Motorola customers like Middleburgh can integrate the FTTP equipment with existing Motorola RF STBs and headend equipment. While the deal with Middleburgh pales in comparison to its wins with Verizon and other large international telcos, it does show that Motorola is becoming more of a competitive threat to not only insurgent FTTP vendors (Calix, Enablence and Occam), but also large incumbents (Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Huawei) as well.
