If you`re looking to get a 1 Gbps Fiber to the X (FTTX) connection, you should take a look at Eagan, MN where local Velocity Telephone is putting a new spin on the FTTX concept by building what it is calling a Metro Ring Fiber to the Home/Business network.
The Eagan Community Fiber Network is a community-wide Metro Ring fiber network that will provide direct fiber connections to homes and businesses to form interconnected circular networks throughout the city. Velocity claims that the ring network architecture will not only reduce network deployment costs, but increase reliability and minimize network repair costs.
As a nod to Google`s overhyped FTTX drive, the Eagan Community Fiber Network will be able to provide homes and businesses within Eagan`s 34.5 square miles with up to 1,000 Mbps connections. Velocity expects Phase I of the network, which includes a four-square mile optical fiber in the northwest quadrant of the city, to be operational in June. From there, Velocity will build out more interconnected fiber rings that will serve the whole city.
