Fourth undesea cable breaks in a week

04.02.2008

The fourth international fiber-optic telecom cable to break in a week has cut several services in the Middle East region. The Qatar-UAE cable was cut between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das, disrupting Internet services. On Friday Flag Telecom, part of India`s Reliance Communications, said its Falcon cable had been cut between the UAE and Oman. This followed two earlier breaks in cables in the Mediterranean Sea linking Europe and Asia, with the Egyptian Ministry of Communications denying the cuts to these cables had been caused by ship anchors.

TeleGeography Research Director Alan Mauldin said new cable construction will prevent such outages in the future, with several new cable systems slated to enter service between Europe and Egypt in the next few years.
