Middle East provider makes big Broadband over Powerline bet

04.05.2010

Broadband over Powerline (BPL) may have failed to live up to ambitious hype in the U.S. market, but Egypt-based SABA Electric believes it has the right ingredients to make BPL a success in the Middle East.

Made possible through a partnership with Middle East ISP LINKdotNET, SABA Electric plans to deliver BPL-based service across 70,000 residential units in Haram City, Orascom Housing Communities` project. Leveraging Corinex`s BPL access technology, Haram City-based residents and businesses will be able to get a triple play service suite (voice, video and data) through their standard electric outlet. Built in what appears to be an open access network architecture, SABA`s network can not only be used by ISPs to deliver broadband access services, but also voice operators, local utilities (automated meters and smart grid) and security and surveillance companies.

Nothing short of ambitious, the first phase of SABA`s BPL deployment covers about 1500 residential units with broadband data speed packages that scale from 1 Mbps to 8 Mbps that include a number of VoIP and video options. When the BPL network is completed it could reach over 300,000 residents through medium and low voltage electrical lines connecting more than 64 electrical transformers.
