BT Wholesale reaches five million 21CN user mark

26.08.2010

BT Wholesale`s (NYSE: BT) aggressive network rollouts have paid off as the service provider now runs over five million broadband users on its Wholesale Broadband Managed Connect (WBMC) over IPStream Connect service. The service provider reached the five million mark after it transferred 230,000 customers onto IPStream Connect at its Ilford exchange.

Providing connectivity to over 50 competitive providers including Carphone Warehouse and Cable and Wireless` Demon, IPStream Connect provides a migration path for wholesale service provider customers that want a path from BT`s legacy 20CN to the emerging 21CN network.

Wholesale customers that migrate to IPStream will be able to deliver services over a unified link in addition to being able to extend BT`s up to 24 Mbps ADSL2+ and up to 40 Mbps over a Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC)-based connection. By migrating onto WBMC with IPStream Connect, BT says service provider customers can reduce their costs because it can shut down BT Central pipes that are used to backhaul legacy IPStream services that have been used since 2000.

In preparation for the 2012 London Olympics BT has been upping the deployment of its FTTX network. This May, BT announced that it would expand its planned Fiber to the X (FTTX) footprint from 40 percent to 66 percent of homes.
