XO enhances Northern, VA LMDS wireless network

06.04.2010

With a 19,000-mile U.S. network in place, XO is no slouch in the fiber department, but the service provider complements its wired holdings with a sizeable 80 market Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) network. Used either as an alternative network service option or to enhance wireline network redundancy, XO has updated its broadband wireless coverage across the Washington, D.C. region by deploying a new wireless hub in the Tysons Corner area of Northern Virginia.

As an extension of its fiber network, XO can connect customer sites to its wireless network with connection speeds that range from as low as 10 Mbps up to 1 Gbps. These connections can then be used for various services, including VoIP, Ethernet, MPLS IP-VPN and private line services in addition to network redundancy and business continuity.

A key point of XO`s LMDS service is network redundancy. If a fiber network connection fails due to a major storm or a fiber cut occurs due to a construction project, a business customer could potentially have their network switch over to the LMDS network to maintain network uptime.

"XO`s expanded broadband wireless capabilities opens the door to a wider world of options for high-speed network access for businesses across the region that do not have fiber access at their locations or lack a wide range of alternatives providers," said Billy Becker, general manager of the Washington, D.C. market for XO Communications.  "This expansion is part of our continuing focus to provide businesses with innovative high-speed network services."
