Cablevision fans out its New York, Jersey WiFi presence

30.10.2009

Following a recent effort to equip New York`s Metropolitan Transportation Authority`s commuter trains with WiFi, Cablevision said it has now extended its Optimum WiFi service into Brooklyn, The Bronx and New Jersey (Hoboken, Paterson, Newark, Elizabeth, Weehawken, Union City and Bayonne, N.J).

With Verizon`s FiOS service looming large in New York and New Jersey, WiFi is yet another churn reducer Cablevision is using to retain its Optimum Online customer base. The cable MSO claims that any of its 2.5 million Optimum Online customers can access free Internet in various public areas.

Although the MSO has not indicated if its wireless ambitions will include traditional mobile voice and data services, Cablevision continues to make progress with WiFi. In addition to offering WiFi service throughout its New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas, Cablevision recently began offering WiFi service in its Madison Square Garden complex.
