Arris reaps rewards of cable's DOCSIS 3.0 drive

03.08.2009

Buoyed by aggressive deployments by Comcast, CMTS supplier Arris said it saw an uptick in DOCSIS 3.0 network equipment shipments during the second quarter. According to an article in Cable Digital News, Bruce McClelland, president of Arris` Broadband Division, said that "greater than 60 percent" of the CMTS shipments made were DOCSIS 3.0-capable. During the quarter Arris said it shipped 32,005 downstream units, 30,852 upstream units, and 314 CMTS chassis.

Arris came out ahead of its CMTS competition. CMTS competitor Motorola, in comparison, shipped only 15,103 downstream ports, 13, 052 upstream ports, and 222 CMTS chassis in the second quarter.

Despite the uptick in CMTS shipments, Arris` revenues came up a bit short. The company reported that Q2 09 revenues of $278.5 million, up 9.9 percent compared to Q1 09 revenues of $235.5 million, but down 0.9 percent compared to the $281.1 million in revenue for the same period last year. The company reported $532 million in revenues for the first half of 2009, a 4.1 percent decrease when compared to the $554.6 million the company reported during Q2 2008. On the bright side, company earnings were 5 cents per share more than analyst consensus predictions.
